The Word of God contains within itself all that is needed to understand and correctly apply it. You need to do your own work and come to your own conclusions. Generally speaking, Bible commentaries and other helps should be used after your own study to add additional insight or to check your conclusions. [If you come up with something that no Bible-believing, conservative Christian in the last 2,000 years has ever seen before it doesn't automatically mean you are wrong, but it is a HUGH warning sign.] The exception to this is concordances which help you to find the verses you are looking for in your study.
