Biblical Law I Lesson 10

Welcome back.  We are continuing to examine the the seventh commandment.

For Lesson Ten read: Institutes Of Biblical Law Vol. 1 pages 381 - 419.  Any questions not answered when you watch the video must be marked wrong.

Pause this video now until you have completed all the questions.

The Seventh Commandment

Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery

Sex and Crime

1.   Nietzsche believed rightly that disbelief in God and in immortality would created a world of VIOLENT men.  pg. 383

Humanists like to accuse God and the Bible of being against women when; in fact, it is their policies and practices that put women in bondage and make them slaves.

2. It was the Age of REASON which also reduced woman’s legal status to that of a slave as part of its “love.”  pg. 383

3. Those who are hostile to God and His law will be sympathetic and friendly toward CRIMINALS.  pg. 384

4. The punishment in HUMANISTIC society is progressively directed against the innocent and law-abiding.  pg. 384

As humanism continues to become the dominate religion in Western society, we see this more and more.  People wonder why there is no real justice in our society.  It is because we have forsaken the God Who loves justice.

5. The cause of crime is not sex, it is SIN.  pg. 386

Sex and Religion

6. When man turns to self-worship, he ends by worshipping his own SEXUAL vice.  pg. 386

We will worship someone or something.  As we have stated before, whoever is our ultimate lawmaker is our god.  When we make ourselves god, we worship by pleasing ourselves through unlimited sexual activities to the destruction of ourselves and others.

7. By orgy Bataille of course means the religious festivals of antiquity which called for the religious practice of acts of CHAOS.  pg.  388

8. The times of INTENSE sexuality are also commonly times of low sexual VITALITY.  pg. 390

9. This defiance requires the religious enactment of EVIL as a matter of principle.  pg. 391

10. It is a law of being that religious apostasy has MORAL consequences.  pg. 392

We choose our actions, but we cannot choose the consequences.

11. Sex and religion are thus closely and inescapably linked in every NON-BIBLICAL faith.  pg. 392

12. Men must either rebuild in terms of the triune God or be plowed under by His JUDGMENT.  pg. 392

God will not be mocked.

Adultery

13. Normal sexuality for the Christian is martial sexuality; adultery is a violation of that relationship and an abnormal CRIMINAL act, an assault on fundamental order.  pg. 394

14. The law required the EXTERMINATION of the Canaanites, their fertility cults, and their religious prostitution.  pg. 394

15. No only were the Canaanite prostitutes to be eliminated, but none of HEBREW origin were to exist.  pg. 395

16. In Proverbs, all EXTRA-MARITAL sexuality is condemned.  pg. 395

17. ADULTERY is thus placed on the same level as murder, in that it is a murderous act against the central social institution of any healthy culture.  pg. 395

To kill the family, is to murder society.

18. The family is the central custodian of PROPERTY and of CHILDREN.  pg. 396

19. The penalty of the rape of a married woman, or of a betrothed woman, was DEATH.  pg. 396

20. In marriage, the woman was protected from abuse and slander by her HUSBAND.  pg. 397

Submission to authority does not mean accepting abuse.  All legitimate authority must be under authority and is required to act righteously.

21. Adultery is first and last an offence against GOD and His law-order.  pg. 398

We must keep God central in all things.

22. Jesus made clear that a judge must have CLEAN hands, or else he is disqualified from judging.  pg. 398

23. To confuse religious and civil FORGIVENESS is a serious error.  pg. 398

When Jesus forgave the woman taken in adultery, He offered religious forgiveness.  That did not mean that a criminal charge could not be made by her husband, although the charge would have had to be against both the guilty parties.

24. The judgment of God is INESCAPABLE.  pg. 398

25. The proper judgment of the CHURCH both recognizes the death penalty and acts in terms of present reality.  pg. 399

26. In a healthy society, TREASON is a rare crime.  pg. 400

27. Penance served a double purpose:

A.  It demonstrated the SINCERITY of the profession of repentance

B.  It constituted a form of RESTITUTION.

It is interesting that penance, like so many things, started out with a good purpose, but over the years became corrupted to an evil purpose.

Divorce

28. Marriage in Scripture is the VOLUNTARY union of two persons, a man and a woman in wedlock…without consent, the union is always in effect RAPE.  pg. 401

In principle, there is nothing wrong with arranged marriages as long as the prospective man and woman both give voluntary consent to the choice.  Without that consent, it is rape of either or both of the parties.

29. Union involves mutual consent; the DISSOLUTION of a marriage does not.  pg. 401

30. The most common form of divorce is by DEATH.  pg. 401

Any activity that would result in the death penalty in a Godly society, is a legitimate grounds for divorce in an ungodly society.

31. Men had a greater LIABILITY to the death penalty because of their position of authority.  pg. 403

32. IGNORANCE does not excuse the sin or eliminate the punishment, but only lessons it.  pg. 403

33. A second form of divorce appears in the Mosaic legislation, divorce for breach of the MARITAL law.  pg. 403

34. A third type of divorce is implied in cases of consanguinity and MIXED marriages.  pg. 403

This refers to marriages of mixed faith, not mixed races.  Both Rahab and Ruth converted from pagan religious cultures and races and married Israelite men without any condemnation.  But to be married to a  person who is actively pursing a faith hostile to Christianity is another matter.

35. A fourth type of divorce was by writing a BILL of divorce given by the husband to the wife.  pg. 403

36.   The BILL OF DIVORCE was not the evil but dealt with the evil.  pg. 404

37. ‘If the woman find no grace in her husband’s eyes’ has reference to the husband’s holy standards as a COVENANT-keeper and image-bearer.

This does not mean that a woman can be divorced if she burns the toast or fails to dance to the whims of her husband, as the Scribes and Pharisees of Jesus’ day taught.  The law assumes the husband is a Godly man who faithfully serves God.  It is only when his wife chooses an ungodly lifestyle that opposes his leading the family in the ways of God, that the bill of divorce could be written.

38. SCRIPTURE is never given to the idle use of words, or to their careless use.  pg. 406

39. Fornication then in this place of the Judges is understood for STUBBORN DISOBEDIENCE against her husband, and not for adultery.  pg. 408

40. Jesus, by making the inclusive term fornication the valid grounds for divorce, thereby made…offenses that once let to divorce by DEATH grounds for divorce by bills of divorce.  pg. 410

41. The MOSAIC law is nowhere regarded as a lower or inferior legislation.

This is very important to understand, as many Christians - even Christian teachers - downplay the Mosaic Law as for the Old Testament period only.  Some even go so far as to say that our modern humanistic laws are vastly superior.  This is a denial of the Word of God, often to please skeptics who take these laws out of context and mock them.

The Family as Trustee

42. Private property is a STABILIZING force for the family and society.  pg. 415

43. SOCIALISM attacks parental control over both children and property in order to ensure the priority of the state in society.  pg.  416

All of our main North American political parties are socialistic.  Some are just more extreme than others.  Our society has been trained to look to government as the provider of all things.  Until the Church returns to the Biblical standard and teaches it members to do so we will continue on the self-destructive road until the judgment of God overtakes us.  You may also be interested in my course, Christian Social Theory, for practical illustrations of this in today’s society.

44. Marriage is clearly a WORKING partnership of man and wife in the service of God, exercising dominion in their appointed spheres.  pg. 416

45. The family is the God-given, God-ordained custodian of PROPERTY.  pg. 417

46. The DOWRY was the bridal gift by the bridegroom to the bride to seal the marriage in terms of godly responsibility.  pg. 417

Every wife should insist on an adequate life insurance policy on her husband, at the very least.

47. In Biblical law, the dowry PRECEDED marriage.  pg. 417

48. Before the family can reverse its course, and that of society, it must have a BIBLICAL LAW-FAITH.  pg. 418

49. In Biblical faith, the trustee family was geared to the FUTURE.  pg. 419

In Lesson Eleven we will finish the Seventh Commandment and Biblical Law I.  For that lesson, read pages 419 -447 and write from memory Ex. 20:1-14.  May the peace and grace of Jesus be yours.
