The Earth Will Be Filled
With The Glory Of God
A misunderstanding of Scripture has slipped into mainstream Christianity over the last 200 years or so. The devil has slipped blinders on Christians. Blinders are used on horses to keep them focused on the task at hand and to prevent them from spooking by things around them. The devil knows he cannot destroy those whom God has chosen and sealed to Himself, but he can limit their effectiveness by keeping them focused on the so-called spiritual area of life. While he does like Christians to get spooked by the evil in the world, he doesn’t want them to discern the truth. And he has been very effective. We will look at this misunderstanding that limits the faith of Christians in a minute.
“Woe to him who builds a town with blood and founds a city on iniquity!
Behold, is it not from the Lord of hosts that peoples labor merely for fire, and nations weary themselves for nothing?
For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea. Hab. 2:12-14, ESV
Habakkuk is an interesting book of the Bible. This situation in his time sounds like the days in which we live. Our cities and nations are built on blood: the blood of crime, the blood of murdered babies, the blood of the homeless and poverty-stricken. Blood flows in our streets, often with the civil leaders’ and general population’s full support and promotion. Sin is the foundation of our current nations. I have said for a long time that we are a nation built on murder and theft.
What is the result of all this? “People labour merely for fire, nations weary themselves for nothing.” The more the general population of a nation rejects God and abuses the time He gives them; the more God restricts the time that they have. More and more time has to be given to mere survival - paying high rents, high-priced or scarce groceries and the necessities of life. And it will only get worse.
What does this have to do with the misunderstanding of Scripture?
The devil wants Christians to forget about the world and focus on so-called spiritual pursuits. He had been very successful. Now, things are changing. Christians are beginning to see that they must live Christian lives in the world, although only about 10% of regular church-going Christians have a Biblical worldview.
However, even when Christians work on influencing the world around them, he fools them into thinking it is a hopeless task. He wants the Christian to project the attitude, “We must do our best, but we can’t possibly win before Jesus returns.” He wants us to think that because perverse cultures, evil governments, and persecution have been the norm for 2,000 years, it must always be that way. He wants us to believe in a dispensational dystopian future.
Nonsense! While before the return of Christ, we will always have to deal with our sinful nature and evil in the world, that does not mean that it will always be dominant. The extreme evil we see in the world today is a short-term bump on a very long road to the return of Christ.
What does Habakkuk 2:14 say?
“For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.”
The word used for “knowledge” is the same word that is used when Adam knew his wife and they had a son. This is intimate knowledge, not a brief handshake. How does the water cover the sea? Completely.
There is coming a time before Christ’s return when the glory of God will cover the earth. It’s about time we had a real vision of victory.
Don’t we believe John 3:15 - For God so loved the world… Is He really going to leave it in the hands of perverse God-haters? What is God waiting for? Probably for His church to mature and get with the program! We need to start believing the Truth.
Don’t we take our orders in Matthew 28:19 to make disciples of all nations seriously? Do we think that nations can be disciplined while evil leaders are actively promoting horrendous, sadistic sins?
Am I saying that a minority of Christians seize control and force everyone to live to Christian standards? Of course not! It’s been tried, it doesn’t work. It’s not God’s way.
Victory comes only through the blood of Jesus Christ, as applied by the Holy Spirit in our lives and the world. We are responsible for learning and living a Biblical worldview and influencing our culture with Godly love and principles. We are to be faithful builders. If an evil culture tears it down, we build again. Learn a lesson from the spiders. Their webs get ripped apart, but they always rebuild. We may have to endure persecution, but it will bear fruit in this world and the next one.
Do we really have so little confidence in the Holy Spirit that we don’t think He can take faithful Christians and create a world that is ready to welcome its Divine bridegroom back? I will tell you this: until the Holy Spirit can present a spotless Bride on a world transformed by the glory of God and for the glory of God, Jesus is not returning. So get a vision of victory and start building the Kingdom of God in your area of influence.ab
If you do now know the Lord Jesus Christ as your personal Saviour, now is the time. Confess that you are a sinner, ask Jesus to forgive you and become your Lord and Saviour, and then tell someone else of your decision. Ask Jesus to direct you to a good local church; don’t rest until you find one. You can also drop me a note from the website and let me know that Jesus is now your Lord.
