Biblical Law I Lesson 8

Welcome back.  We are continuing on with the sixth commandment - Thou shalt not kill - and we will start on the seventh commandment - Thou shalt not commit adultery.  It is amazing how much this applies to.  The more we study Biblical Law, the more we begin to realize just how much we need a Saviour!

For Lesson Eight read: Institutes Of Biblical Law Vol. 1 pages 302 - 341.  Any questions not answered when you watch the video must be marked wrong.

Pause this video now until you have completed all the questions.

The Sixth Commandment continued

Thou Shalt Not Kill

Christ and the Law

1. The very death of Christ CONFIRMED the law.  pg. 302

If the law was unimportant, temporary, or only confined to certain dispensations or eras, then the death of Christ was unnecessary.  What an insult to the work of Christ on the Cross!  We need to be very careful on what we say about the Law of God.

2. Our salvation is ENTIRELY of God’s grace.  pg. 303

3. The law is not given as man’s way of salvation but as God’s way of RIGHTEOUSNESS.  pg. 303

Take a look at this illustration.  Only Christianity will lead to life through the blood of Jesus Christ.  As we have said many times before, the Law is not a method of salvation.  To use the law as a method of salvation is legalism.  Every religion, except true Christianity, is legalistic at its core and leads to death.  Statist humanism is extremely legalistic as it looks to the government to make the law that will save mankind.  It is slavery with the illusion of freedom.  Life and death is in the answer to the questions: Who or what is your Saviour and what is the proper place of Law?

4. Paul upheld the law as man’s way of SANCTIFICATION rather than justification.  pg. 304

5. The death of Christ means that believers are dead in Him to the DEATH SENTENCE of the law.  pg. 304

6. It is  clearly only the SACRIFICIAL and CEREMONIAL law which is ended because it is replaced by Christ and His work.  pg. 305

While the sacrificial and ceremonial law was a shadow of the work of Christ, we can still learn a lot about what Christ accomplished by understanding it and what specific laws were a picture of.

7. Socialism and communism are SAVING law orders.  pg. 305

8. The law in every age sets forth the HOLINESS of God.  pg. 306

9. To forsake God’s law is to forsake GOD.  pg. 306

I wonder how many Christians, who oppose the law of God, realize the implications of what they are saying?  God cannot be divided up.  The law is a revelation of the nature and holiness of God.  If we do away with the law, then we are fashioning and worships a god of our own creation.  We are engaged in idol worship no matter how Biblical we may sound or how sincere our intentions are.

10. Sanctification may be defined as THAT GRACIOUS AND CONTINUOUS OPERATION OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, BY WHICH HE DELIVERS THE JUSTIFIED SINNER FROM THE POLLUTION OF SIN, RENEWS HIS WHOLE NATURE IN THE IMAGE OF GOD, AND ENABLES HIM TO PERFORM GOOD WORKS.  pg. 307

As you can see from Rushdooney’s comments on Pentecostalism on page 307, he was not a supporter of the Pentecostal experience.  I grew up in the environment of pentecostalism with the speaking in tongues.  I still firmly believe in it as the will of God for His people.  However, I understand the concerns mentioned in your textbook.  Sometimes people who are filled with Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues consider believers who did not have that experience as inferior or second-class.  This attitude is sin.  The Kingdom of God has no second-class citizens.  Each one of us stands before God solely on the basis of the Blood of Christ.  Another serious weakness has been to seek or rely on emotion experiences and to consider them equal to or more important than the Word of God.  God gave us emotions and it is wonderful when they “feel good.”  But the Word of God is our standard, not our emotions.  The subjective leading of the Spirit must always be submitted to the objective standard of God’s Word.  On the other hand, we should never throw out what is good, because of how it has been abused and misused.

Work

11. With the fall came a CURSE on man’s work, but work is not a curse.  pg. 308

12. Man should therefore ENJOY work.  pg. 310

Many in our sinful world choose to live in a make-believe world.  Socialism, for example, is a fantasy world believing it can violate God’s law of economics and relationships and end up with a better world.  Some people think that changing laws on marriage can make same-sex unions work or, at least, legitimize them.  That can no more be done than making rain illegal is going stop it from raining.  It is total arrogance.  Laws can not make fantasy worlds true.  Those who choose to live in a fantasy world hate and attack anyone who would burst their fragile bubble.  They want tolerance but are unable to give it.  Deep inside they know they are fighting against reality and they hate any reminder of the falseness of their beliefs.

13. The decline of productivity and the rise of make-believe are thus signs of a society in DECLINE.  pg. 312

Amalek

14. Amalek was at WAR against God and God was at WAR against Amalek.  pg. 313

15. Israel was required to wage war unto DEATH against Amalek.  pg. 314

16. The use of TERROR is a routine political fact in the modern world of humanism.  pg. 316

17. When men attack God’s people, there we often have a COVERT OR OVERT attack on God.  pg. 318

18. The COVENANT people must wage war against the enemies of God, because this is a war unto death.  pg. 318

Sometimes Christians submit to evil out of a false understanding of submission.  We submit to legitimate authority, we treat all people with respect, but we war against evil people and laws.  We are to protect Godly laws and innocent people.  We are to represent both God’s mercy and justice.

Amalek and Violence

19. The wicked ENJOY their evil.  pg. 318

20. Since man cannot become CREATOR God, he seeks to be a DEVIL-god.  pg. 320

21. Violent men try to provoke a religious awe by means of SHOCK.  pg. 320

22. VIOLENCE does not abdicate:  it is either destroyed, or it destroys.  pg. 321

23. All men do need regeneration, clearly, but again EVANGELISM is not the answer to all problems, although it must ALWAYS be operative.  pg. 321

While we always try to win people for Christ, we do not protect them for the legitimate consequences of their actions.

24. Love, conversion, and law-order can never be SUBSTITUTES for one another.  pg. 321

Violence as Presumption

25. If God is the king of the nation, rebellion against His law is TREASON.  pg. 323

Since God is the King of the entire universe, His law governs every nation.  Any political leader who is in rebellion to the law of God is guilty of treason against God Almighty.  Their rule is illegitimate and they will be judged by God.  This is one reason we are to pray for them, pray that they may repent while there is still time.  When the majority of people turn to Christ, God will give them Godly leaders.  God’s answer to evil rulers is regeneration not revolution.

26. The goal of the violent ones is total DESTRUCTION.  pg. 325

27. Civil disobedience which is firmly grounded in Biblical law is one thing, but civil disobedience which places man ABOVE the law is another: it is anarchy.  pg. 325

28. Wherever a society refuses to exact the required DEATH PENALTY, there God exacts the death penalty on that society.  pg. 326

Due to the wholesale war against God, including the murder of millions of babies, in our nations today, we stand on death row.  Only national repentance can turn us from the judgment of God.

29. To fear God is to HATE evil in its every form, and to love evil men is to HATE God and to despise His law-word.  pg. 327

Social Inheritance: Landmarks

30. To destroy the barrier between right and wrong, between truth and falsehood, and between God and false gods, is to MURDER society.  pg. 328

31. To deny God means ultimately to deny MAN.  pg. 330

32. In a world without landmarks, every law or landmark is a CRIMINAL offense.  pg. 331

33. If it is a crime to rob banks, then surely it is a crime to rob and murder a SOCIAL ORDER.  pg. 332

The Seventh Commandment

Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery

Marriage

34. The purpose of the seventh commandment is to protect MARRIAGE.  pg. 333

35. The human interdependence exists because the prior DEPENDENCE on God requires the unity of His creation under His law.  pg. 334

36. Wives are not placed in bondage by the Biblical commandment of submission but are rather established in the LIBERTY and SECURITY of a God-ordained relationship.  pg. 335

37. Where feeling is the basis of marriage rather than a religious principle, then ultimately marriage becomes ROBBERY.  pg. 335

38. The whole universe is one of submission to AUTHORITY.  pg. 336

Everyone is under the authority of someone - and usually more than one in different areas.  Only God is under no one’s authority.  To claim independence is to claim godhood.

39. The world of God’s law and God-ordained authorities is man’s true LIBERTY.  pg. 337

40. The alternative to submission is EXPLOITATION.  pg. 338

God’s system of submission does not bring bondage, but true freedom.  It is a protection from exploitation.

41. The husband’s love is defined as SERVICE.  pg. 338

42. A central aspect of the MEANING of marriage is that it is a type of Christ and His church.  pg. 339

43. The NAME AND NATURE  of all earthly relationships is derived from the triune God.  pg. 340

44. True marriage is a realization of a phase of life in COMMUNITY under God.  pg. 340

45. This clearly means a hierarchy of authorities, and the the highest rule or standard of all hierarchies as of all men is the BIBLE.  pg. 341

In the last three lessons of this course, we will be examining the seventh commandment.  For lesson nine read pages 341 - 381.  Memorize Ex. 20:14 and write from memory Ex. 20: 1-14.  May the peace and grace of our Lord Jesus be with you.
