The Fifth Commandment continued
Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. Ex. 20:12, KJV
The Economics of Family
1. The word “property” should be regarded as a very highly possessive and AFFECTIONATE term rather than a cold one. pg. 175
2. Marriage normally was by dowry: the GROOM gave a dowery to the bride which constituted her protection and the children’s inheritance. pg. 176
3. There are indications that the normal dowry was about THREE years wages.
As mentioned in the textbook, the perversion of the dowry system makes a girl a liability to the family. God’s system values her and protects her. Anyone who says that Biblical Law dishonours women is talking in ignorance. It is false religions which often make slaves of women and limit their true development. Even humanism, which pretends to promote women, supports pornography, sex slavery and other degrading and hurtful practices.
On a different note: For a modern application of the Biblical dowry system, I think a woman should insist that her prospective husband take out a life insurance policy equivalent to at least three years gross wages with her as the beneficiary after engagement but before marriage. Any man not willing to do this minimal requirement should not be considered as a husband. Any man who cannot afford such a policy is not ready for the responsibilities of a wife and children.
4. God speaks of a TALKING wife, but one who speaks with wisdom and in kindness. pg. 178
5. CHRISTIAN education is a basic aspect of a parents support for their children. pg. 179
6. Adult children also have a responsibility to provide for their PARENTS. pg. 179
7. The main HEIR supported and cared for the parents as need required it. pg. 180
8. The child which supports and cares for the aged parents in the main or true HEIR. pg. 180
For example, for a daughter who cares for her parents to be given second place in her parent’s will to a son who ignores them is injustice and sin. And the parents will answer for it before the throne of God.
9. An inheritance is precisely that, a BLESSING, and for a parent to confer a blessing or the central blessing on an unbelieving child is to bless evil. pg. 180
This is very difficult. The parents, naturally, still love the wayward child. It is emotionally distressing to cut that child from the will. However, they must consider that everything they have ultimately came from God and is held in trust for Him. Kingdom interests have to take priority. To take what belongs to God and give it to someone who is indifferent or oppose to God is to attempt to use God’s own resources against Him.
10. Throughout history the basic welfare agency has been the FAMILY. pg. 181
11. The family is the basic ECONOMIC unit of society, and the strongest one. pg. 181
Education and the Family
12. Parental education involves CHASTISEMENT. pg. 182
13. The parents have a duty to provide the child with a GODLY education. pg. 182
Public education has a deliberate agenda of destroying any belief in God and any influence of the family. This is not in simply some subjects - such as pornographic sex education - but is the underlining philosophy of everything that is done. It is seen most horrifically and dramatically in the teaching on gender where children are promoted into a life-long addiction to drugs and body mutilation. Public education is child abuse. Many other options, even those that have Christian names, are not much better. As parents it is your responsibility to search for Godly schools and options. And to continue to actively monitor them to ensure a safe and healthy education.
14. There can be no NEUTRALITY in education. pg. 182
15. Hebrew education was intensely PRACTICAL. pg. 183
16. Biblical education was productive of RESPONSIBLE people. pg. 183
17. Basic to the calling of every child is to be a member of a FAMILY. pg. 184
18. Biblical education emphasizes learning, GODLY learning. pg. 185
19. Knowledge requires as its presupposition in every area the knowledge of GOD. pg. 185
20. The best a truest educators are PARENTS under God. pg. 185
The Family and Delinquency
21. There is a LIMITATION in the power of the family. pg. 186
22. In Biblical law, ALL life is under God and His law. pg. 186
23. The law requires that the family ALIGN itself with law and order rather than with a criminal member. pg. 186
24. If the parents refused to COMPLAIN against their son, they were then guilt of condoning and/or participation in his crimes. pg. 187
25. The intent of this law is that all incorrigible and habitual criminals be EXECUTED. pg. 187
26. The purpose of the law is to eliminate entirely a criminal element from the nation, a PROFESSIONAL criminal class. pg. 188
Can you imagine how many lives would be spared pain, how much peace there would be in our communities, and how prosperous law-abiding people would be in our world if this was applied? Not too long ago in a community not far from where I live a group of young people swarmed a couple of police officers. If they faced capital punishment, incidents like that would never happen. But in Canada, as in much of the world, we are too cowardly to put to death murderers, let along incorrigible and professional criminals. And so, we sentence ourselves to death. If we will not put evil to death, evil will put us to death. There is no compromise or peace between the two.
27. The Biblical law demands pity for the OFFENDED, not the OFFENDER. pg. 188
Sadly, many times police officers, lawyers and judges find it easier to prosecute the victim rather than the criminal. The criminal has more rights. Even the apostle Paul when he was the innocent victim of a mob attack, found himself being arrested - not his attackers.
28. Deuteronomy 25:11-12 is the only instance in Biblical Law where MUTILATION is the punishment. pg. 189
29. FAITH requires staying within the law of God. pg. 189
30. The crime of the delinquent son involves an assault or war on FUNDAMENTAL authority. pg. 190
31. Neither the parents nor the state are the creators of life, therefore they cannot fix the TERMS of life. pg. 190
32. LAW is a form of warfare. pg. 191
33. The COURTS, by making their conviction difficult, are in effect subsidizing crime and making war on the law-abiding. pg. 191
The Principle of Authority
34. The family is the first ENVIRONMENT of the child, it is also his first SCHOOL; his first CHURCH; his first STATE; and his first VOCATION. pg. 192
35. Every parent needs to realize that he represents GOD to his child! pg. 193
36. The best functioning MIND is the obedient and disciplined mind. pg. 195
37. In Puritan America, children were usually taught to READ by their mothers between the ages of two and four. pg. 195
A major motivation for that was so that they could read the Bible for themselves.
38. Godly OBEDIENCE is the best ground for resistance to evil. pg. 198
39. What is in common among parents, rulers, teachers, and masters is not parenthood, but AUTHORITY. pg. 198
40. The primary and basic authority in God’s law-order is the FAMILY. pg. 198
41. If parents are not OBEYED by children, no other authority will be honoured or obeyed. pg. 198
42. This obedience is first of all rendered to GOD. pg. 199
The Family and Authority
43. The FAMILY became the normal and legal way of life for all. pg. 199
44. The family was now far more than the basic social unit: it was in essence the SOCIAL system. pg. 200
45. The MAN as the head of the family is the necessary principle of order, and also the principal in order. pg. 201
46. Male and female need each other, and godly order means MARRIAGE, the union of man and woman under God and to His glory and service. pg. 202
47. Where women are concerned about their DEFENSE, it means normally that either a fearful outside invader is threatening the society, or else within the social order MEN are ceasing to function as MEN. pg. 203
A man will be either a Protector or a Predator, even by the fact of withdrawing and allowing other Predators to take control.
48. In a matriarchal society women are faced with a DOUBLE responsibility. pg. 203
49. List Sorin’s four duties of the marriage relationship:
1. MUTUAL AFFECTION
2. MUTUAL CONFIDENCE
3. MUTUAL ATTENTION AND RESPECT
4. MUTUAL ASSISTANCE pg. 204
50. PERMISSIVENESS strikes directly at parental authority. pg. 205
51. The lack of self-discipline leads to SELF-IMPORTANCE. pg. 205
Illustration: Goal is a full and satisfying life. Permissiveness > lack of self-discipline > self-importance. Fails to reach goal. Can’t rise any higher than self - a very low goal. Obedience > Self-Control > Service to God and others. Reaches goal.
The Holy Family
52. Jesus Christ was born as HEIR to the throne of David. pg. 208

55. Christ by His virgin birth was a new creation, a new ADAM. pg. 210
56. Jesus Christ, as King of the earth, has the right of DOMINION. pg. 211
All people and institutes are to be under the rule of Jesus Christ. Their rebellion does not excuse them, but brings them under the judgment of the broken law. Only in Christ Jesus can we move to the right side of the law as law-keepers.
57. Jesus Christ was born under the law and into law, to FULFILL the law. pg. 211
As we noted in our Master Life course, Fulfill means to complete, not to abolish.
58. Jesus Christ obeyed the FAMILY law. pg. 211
59. Christ indicated that true heirship is by FAITH more than by blood. pg. 211
The Limitation of Man’s Authority
60. All authority is in essence RELIGIOUS authority. pg. 212
All of life is religious. Those who seek to remove religion from any part of life are either self-deceived or intent on deceiving others so they can establish a new religion.
61. DISOBEDIENCE to existing authority means that a new authority is in view. pg. 212
62. Without a valid doctrine of AUTHORITY, no order stands. pg. 213
63. All obedience is subject to PRIOR obedience to God and His word. pg. 214
64. All authority on earth, being under God and not itself God, is by nature and necessity LIMITED authority. pg. 215
Any government or other organization which seeks complete control over people or the earth is demonic.
65. By requiring capital punishment for incorrigible criminals, the law ELIMINATED the enemies of a godly society. pg. 215
66. By requiring restitution…and corporal punishment…the law worked to restore man to society, to CLEANSE and to HEAL. pg. 216
67. The authority of the civil government is strictly governed and limited by the WORD OF GOD. pg. 216
68. The law asserts the SUPREMACY of the written law-word of God. pg. 216

c. SILVER AND GOLD [RICHES]
3. MUST HAVE, READ, AND STUDY THE LAW-WORD OF GOD ALL HIS LIFE
4. THE PURPOSE OF HIS STUDY IS NOT ONLY TO FURTHER GOD’S LAW ORDER BUT ALSO THAT HIS HEART BE NOT LIFTED UP [I.E. KEEP HIM FROM PRIDE]. pg. 217
70. If the authority of the home is denied, it means that man is in REVOLUTION against the fabric and structure of life, and against life itself. pg. 218
For the next lesson where we will begin the Sixth Commandment you will need to read pages 219 - 262 and answer the questions that go with it. Also write from memory Ex. 20:1-12.
May the grace and peace of the Lord Jesus be with you.
