01 Biblical Law Transcript
Welcome to Biblical Law Part One. In this course we are going to be looking in detail at the first seven commandments. When you have completed this course you will have a good understanding of how God designed the world to operate and why. You will also be able to understand why world is the way it is right now and what needs to be done about it. You will be a man or woman of Issachar.
from Issachar, men who understood the times and knew what Israel should do… 1 Chr. 12:32
In this Biblical Law course we are going to do things differently from some of our other courses. You MUST have the textbook to complete this course. If you don’t already have it, you will need to wait until it arrives before beginning. If you have not done the Master Life course, you could do that while you are waiting.
So how will the lessons work? The textbook is very detailed. You will be given the reading assignment for every lesson. This will also include answering questions as you go through your reading assignment and looking up each Scripture that is referred to but not quoted in the textbook. Don’t forget to look at the footnotes as occasionally answers may be found there! The questions are in chronological order. When you have completed your reading assignment and answered all the questions, then you will watch the teaching video. In the video we will take up the answers to the questions and may make additional comments as we go along. In the video the question answer will be in capitals and the page number where the answer was found will be listed.
I recommend you underline or highlight the answers in your textbook as you find them. If you can’t find one or have it wrong, refer to the page number where that answer is to be found and be sure to mark it.
For Lesson One read: Institutes Of Biblical Law Vol. 1 pages 1 - 40. Any questions not answered when you watch the video must be marked wrong.
Pause this video now until you have completed all the questions.
Introduction
The Importance Of The Law
1. In Wyclif’s time that law should be God’s law was held by ALL. pg. 1
It is interesting that at one time God’s law was held to be the way nations were to be governed. The great attack in modern times by both the world and, in many cases, the church has been to undermine Biblical Law. We have departed from it and then we wonder why our world is in confusion. If the church cannot sound a clear trumpet call, who can?
Illustration: God - God’s Law over all state, church, family business, humanity, nature etc.
As you look at this illustration you will see that God’s law is to be over every aspect of life, but that doesn’t mean that any one area of life is to rule over the others. Separation of Church and State does not mean that the State is not to be govern by God’s law, but that State and Church are different but complementary institutions under God. Part of the church’s responsibility is to teach the state how to govern according to God’s law, but not for the church to rule over it.
2. Christendom believed itself to be God’s REALM because it was governed by the law of God as set forth in Scripture. pg. 1
3. Christendom saw itself as the new ISRAEL of God and no less subject to His law. pg. 1
4. It is a modern heresy that holds that the law of God has no meaning nor any BINDING force for man today. pg. 2
Biblical Law impacted Western civilization. If not for the light of God’s Law we would still be struggling in the dark, not knowing why things did not work out. By steadily abandoning God’s Law today, we are headed back into the dark ages. Peace, justice, and other benefits of the Law will be but a distant memory. We need to awaken our society to the necessity of Biblical Law...and it begins with convincing the Church - this shows how far we have already fallen.
5. But this is not the God of Scripture, whose grace and law remain the SAME in every age, because He, as sovereign and absolute lord, CHANGES not, not does He need to change. pg. 2
6. To attempt to study Scripture without studying its LAW is to deny it. pg. 2
The Validity Of Biblical Law
7. The ANTINOMIAN believes that faith frees the Christian from the law, so that he is not outside the law but is rather dead to it. pg. 2
8. The believer is dead to the law as an INDICTMENT…but the believer is alive to the law as the RIGHTEOUSNESS of God. pg. 3
Illustration of lake of sin - law - land of beauty
As we looked at in the Master Life course, the Law is life or death to me depending on which side I am on. If I am in the lake of sin, the law is death to me. If I am living in the righteousness of Jesus Christ, the law is life to me. It protects me from harm and demands restitution when harm does occur.
9. The law in its judgment upon God’s enemies is DEATH; the law in its sustaining care and blessings is for the law-abiding a principle of LIFE. pg. 3
What Adam did in the Garden of Eden was to reject God’s Law [instructions] for his own law. He was the first humanist.
10. Christ as the new ADAM kept the law perfectly. pg. 3
11. Man’s justification is by the GRACE of God in Jesus Christ; man’s sanctification is by means of the LAW of God. pg. 4
Illustration: Jesus arrow Grace arrow Justification arrow Man//Jesus arrow Law arrow sanctification arrow man. It all comes from Jesus to bring us to the ultimate gaol to have the image of Christ formed in us.
12. To be spiritually minded does not mean to be other-worldly but to apply the mandates of the WRITTEN word under the guidance of the Spirit to this world. pg. 4
Sometimes we come up with strange notions. We think being “spiritual” is some spooky, otherworldly thing. If someone sees angels every night, or reads their Bible for 12 straight hours, or fasts for a week, then they are spiritual. Being spiritual is simply living according to the Word of God as empowered by the Holy Spirit. That’s it. “High” experiences can be great, but true spirituality is proved in the day by day living out of the Word of God.
13. The increasing breakdown of law and order must first of all be attributed to the CHURCHES and their persistent antinomianism. pg. 4
If we don’t like the shape the world is in, we can only blame ourselves. Society will follow the Church. If the Church can’t get its act together, can we expect anything else of Society? We are the leaders - where are we leading?
The Law as Revelation and Treaty
14. Law is in every culture RELIGIOUS in origin. pg. 4
15. In any culture the source of law is the GOD of that society. pg. 4
Illustration: Religion Law Society If we want to know the real religion of a society or culture ask who makes their ultimate laws, who is their ultimate authority.
16. Modern HUMANISM, the religion of the state, locates law in the state and thus makes the state, or the people as they find expression in the state, the god of the system. pg. 5
17. Any change of law is an explicit or implicit change of RELIGION. pg. 5
18. TOLERATION is a device used to introduce a new law-system as a prelude to a new intolerance. pg. 5
We are seeing the results of this today. Abortionists, adulterers, and others have fought against Christian values crying for tolerance and love. They then use the tolerance and love shown them to gain power and when they have power they reveal an incredible intolerance and hatred against anyone who opposes them. It is manipulation and hypocrisy that we have fallen for. It has come to the point where people who hold Christian values are afraid to speak up because they will become a target of vile abuse and law suits. We have armed our enemies and then cry foul when they attack us.
19. The law is the REVELATION of God and His righteousness. pg. 6
20. There is no CONTRADICTION between law and grace. pg. 6
In the Master Life course, I call Law and Grace the divine lovers. They work together in perfect unity.
21. The second characteristic of Biblical Law is that it is a treaty or COVENANT. pg. 7
22. God as the sovereign Lord and Creator gives His law to man as an act of sovereign GRACE. pg. 8
23. The third characteristic of the Biblical law or covenant is that is constitutes a plan for DOMINION under God. pg. 8
God never intended the wicked to rule, abuse and destroy the earth. Jesus Christ won the victory through the cross and His resurrection. It is now the work of the Holy Spirit through His covenant people to implement that victory in time by driving the wicked out of every aspect of this world. We have a mandate to see the kingdom of God ruling over the earth.
For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea. Hab. 2:14, NIV
For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death. 1 Cor. 15:25-26, NIV
If there is an area not covered by the Lordship of Jesus Christ, then there is an area outside of God’s control. If the Holy Spirit, working through the people of God, cannot fully implement the victory of Jesus before the Second Coming, the Satan is, in reality, more powerful for he can destroy more than God can restore. Let us never fall for that satanic lie!
24. The sacrament of Lord’s Supper is the renewal of covenant…so that the sacrament itself re-establishes the LAW. pg. 8
Make sure you see this. Communion is a renewal of our covenant commitment including our commitment to the law of God. It is a serious violation to partake of communion while rejecting God’s law as our way of life. It is a rejection of Jesus Christ as Lord while at the same time trying to take Him as Saviour. Jesus cannot be divided. Lord and Saviour is the Christian confession.
25. For the Bible, there is no law in nature, because nature is FALLEN and cannot be normative. pg. 10
26. REVEALED law is the need and privilege of Christian society. pg. 10
To be a Christian nation, a nation must follow God’s law.
The Direction of the Law
27. The Ten Commandments are not therefore laws among laws, but are the BASIC laws, of which the various laws are specific examples. pg. 10
28. The commandments thus ESTABLISH and PROTECT a basic area of life. pg. 11
29. Since God issues the law…any offence against the law is an offence against GOD. pg. 11
Illustration: Sin attacks the Righteousness of God then others
Every sin is first an attack on the righteousness of God and then on whomever or whatever else it affects.
30. A major portion of the law is CASE law. pg. 11
Illustration - General Law - Case Law - Minimum Case Law
31. The law, then, first asserts principles, second, it cites cases to develop the implications of those principles, and, third, the law has as its purpose and direction the RESTITUTION of God’s order. pg. 12
32. The fulfilment of that covenant is their great commission: to subdue all things and all NATIONS to Christ and His law-word. pg. 14
Unfortunately there are a lot of Christians today who don’t believe God really expects them to fulfill the creation mandate. They have surrendered control of the physical world to satan and his followers - just like Adam - because they don’t want to take responsibility. They would much rather dream about heaven, tickle their ears with sensationalism, or just survive. God is expecting His people, through the Holy Spirit, to be more than conquerors in every area of life. Are we going to take God seriously or just retreat in a fantasy world?
The First Commandment
The First Commandment and the Shema Israel.
33. The law is given to the people saved by grace as their way of GRACE, to set forth the privilege and blessing of the covenant. pg. 15
34. The reason for the giving of these commandments is to awaken the FEAR of God, and that fear might prompt obedience. pg. 16
35. The maintenance of the fear of God would bring PROSPERITY, and the increase of the nation promised to the fathers. pg. 16
36. Deuteronomy 6:4-5 is called the SHEMA ISRAEL and was recited as the morning and evening prayer of Israel. pg. 16 [shu mu]
37. The Biblical declaration is that God’s order is absolute and absolutely BINDING on men and nations. pg. 17
God’s law must apply to all men in all society or He would not be just to judge all by it. It is vital that we see that God’s law be applied everywhere. We have to be careful that we are not out to “westernize” the world but to bring Christ to everyone and have His law rule over all. This certainly cannot be accomplished by force [military or otherwise] but must come as the Holy Spirit moves on the hearts of the majority of people who then order their lives and laws in obedience to the Word of God. If the majority of people in a nation are rebellious, trying to force Biblical Law on them will only result in violence and bloodshed. We must recognize that Biblical Law is the only valid law - worldwide - but we need the power of the Holy Spirit re-creating sinful hearts into God-loving, God-fearing hearts first. Evangelism proceeds restoration.
38. A relativistic, pragmatic law has no premise for MISSIONARY activity. pg. 17
If God’s Word, including His Law, are not ultimate Truth, then there is no reason to bring them to others.
39. If there is no ABSOLUTE law, then every man is his own law. pg. 17
40. God is one, TRUTH is one. pg. 18
41. To attempt to pit law against grace is POLYTHEISTIC…it assumes two ultimate ways and powers in contradiction to one another. pg. 18
Wow. I wonder how many Christians realize that putting God’s Law and God’s Grace against each other is actually declaring there are either two Gods or a God Who changes.
42. The alternative to law is not GRACE; it is lawlessness. pg. 20
43. One absolute, unchanging GOD means one absolute, unchanging law. pg. 20
44. One God, one law, requires one total, unchanging, and unqualified OBEDIENCE. pg. 20
45. EDUCATION in the law is basic to and inseparable both from obedience to the law and from worship. pg. 21
46. Anything other that a Biblically grounded schooling is that an act of APOSTASY for a believer. pg. 21
Illustration: School controlled by satan, Christian pushing their children into it with the excuse that they will be missionaries or light.
That is a powerful statement. Yet many Christians send their children to be trained in the perverse and extreme anti-Godly philosophies of the world. School counsellors have even worked against the parents to convince vulnerable children to have gender changing surgeries. It is child abuse to force children into such unhealthy environments. Even Christian schools are sometimes only Christian in name.
47. God requires that He be WORSHIPPED according to His own word. pg. 22
48. The law of the covenant remains; the covenant rites and signs have CHANGED. pg. 23
Page 23 - I would disagree with Rushdooney on his statement that worship in a unknown tongue is a violation of this commandment. The Bible does teach speaking in unknown tongues as one sign of being baptized with the Holy Spirit. However, I would agree that much damage has been done by people giving into emotionalism. The true infilling of the Holy Spirit will never led people into sin or uncontrolled emotion.
49. The law of God is not a blind, IMPERSONAL, and mechanically operative force. pg. 24
50. The law of God is the law of the absolute and totally personal Creator whose law operates within the context of His LOVE and HATE. pg. 24
51. Without a JEALOUS, personal God, no justice is possible. pg. 25
Because God is jealous for His honour, He will see that justice is done in this life and/or the life after. God will not deny justice. Anyone outside of Jesus Christ will answer and be judged for every violation of God’s law. While we work to establish God’s justice in the world - as a witness to His Holy Character - we can also rest in the fact that ultimate justice rests in the hands of God. “Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?”
52. God’s law is the TESTING of man; therefore, man cannot presume to be god and put God and His law-word on trial. pg. 27
Coming to God with honest questions and our struggles is not wrong. We all work through various trials when even our faith seems to fail and we feel as if God has abandoned us. It is not weakness or even honest doubt that offends God. Many saints of Scriptures and biographies of Christian men and women witness to this. It is the challenging of God, the refusing to believe or act unless He performs how we want Him to, that is sin. We do not make demands of God. We do not try to manipulate God into doing our will in our time. We are to line our life up with His will and trust Him to fulfill His Word in His time. “Hath God said?” Yes, God “hath” said - and we need to obey.
The Undivided Word
53. The history of grace is also a promise of grace if man’s response is one of GRATEFUL obedience to the law and an unswerving devotion to the only true God. pg. 28
54. They shall be preserved from plagues and epidemics, so that obedience is followed by MATERIAL blessings. pg. 29
This is not the prosperity gospel. It is not using God to gain material wealth and success. The Bible acknowledges that we are in a war and there will be times of suffering and testing. This is a general statement of the will of God and how things operate. The keeping of the law is designed to lead to blessings on all levels.
Because in the normal way in which God’s universe is designed to operate material blessings follow to outward obedience, it becomes a test of faith when we are obedient and the blessings do not appear to be there. Consider Job. It required great faith to continue to believe in God when everything seemed to be going wrong in spite of faithful obedience. Sometimes God allows apparent reversals to test and strengthen our faith. After all, it is faith which pleases God. Also consider Joseph. He was faithful and yet spent 13 years of his life as either a slave or a prisoner yet his faith in the goodness of God never failed. How about Paul writing about rejoicing while chained in a stinking, rat-infested prison cell? Sometimes the usual, normal way of things appears to be turned upside down to see what we really do believe.
This also explains why we should not be judging someone who is struggling, condemning them for sin in their life. Sin is one reason why problems and struggles come, but it is certainly not the only reason. As you read and study the lives of great men and women of God it is amazing how many times they were criticized and condemned by other Christians although they were following God to the best of their ability. We need to be very careful not to be in the condemning/criticizing crowd.
55. The law is revealed; the fulfilment of the law is assured because God is God; the mode and time is extensively HIDDEN. pg. 30
56. There can be no arbitrary separation of the law from the GOSPEL: one God means one word. pg. 30
God versus Moloch
57. Any attempt to know and control the FUTURE outside of God is to set up another god in contempt of the Lord. pg. 30
58. The word Moloch means KING. pg. 32
59. Moloch worship was thus a POLITICAL religion. pg. 32
When we think that politics is the answer to our problems or problems in our nation instead of looking to God and considering politics as one aspect of God’s rule, then we are worshipping a false god - like Moloch.
60. The sacrifice of CHILDREN was the supreme sacrifice to Moloch. pg. 33
Today the human sacrifice of children through abortion is done without much thought at all. We are callously barbaric on a scale not even imagined in the ancient world.
61. Solomon’s act introduced the cult [of Moloch] into ISRAEL. pg. 33
Little compromises lead to bigger things, even if they take generations to manifest. The rejection of Christianity today is fuelled in a large part by compromises made in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s: evolution, higher criticism, dispensationalism, etc.
62. Moloch worship was thus STATE worship. pg. 33
When we look to the State today to supply all our needs and look after us we are in fact returning to the ancient religion of Moloch worship. We even practice child sacrifice on the altars of “free” public education [i.e. indoctrination into the State religion of humanism]. Moloch is with us today...and many Christians bow their knees to him and give only lip service to the Lord Jesus Christ.
63. For a state to claim total JURISDICTION, as the modern state does, is to claim to be as god. pg. 34
64. God is the true SOURCE of law. pg. 34
Our modern States, in claiming to be able to make law, are claiming to be God. They, therefore, increasingly demand and try to attain the total power of God. Drug, Terrorism, and other “Wars” are more about increasing power and decreasing personal liberty than anything else. A people who reject God and live in fear will not be able to defend themselves against the corrupt power of their own governments.
Only God can make ultimate Law. His appointed servants [State, Church, Family] are only to apply His Law in their own jurisdictions - they are not to try to control each other or make independent law.
65. God will not hear a people who are complaining about paying the price for their SINS. pg. 35
We may complain about the oppression of our governments, but the fact is we often get the government we deserve. As a society we have turned away from God by removing Him from our schools and everyday life. We have rejected His ways and pursued our own. We have no right to complain about the consequences. If we don’t like the consequences, we need to repent and return to following the ways of God as a society.
66. Since life is given by God and is to be lived on His terms alone, no life of man or beast can be taken except on God’s TERMS. pg. 36
67. To be holy means literally to be SEPARATED. pg. 36
68. The true HOLINESS of man is man’s separation unto God in faith and in obedience to God’s law. pg. 36
69. The death penalty is not required here for PRIVATE belief; it is for attempts to subvert others and to subvert the social order [treason] by entice others to idolatry. pg. 38
In a Christian nation, you can believe what you want to and even practice it to a certain extent, but you could not try to subvert or change the nation away from God. Even for the non-Christian, living in Christian nations gives the most freedom possible for the most people.
70. Without RESTITUTION, crime becomes potentially profitable, and the victim is penalized by the state. pg. 38
71. A society which tolerates penalties against itself and against its law-abiding citizens is a dangerous and DYING society. pg. 38
Today it is the innocent who place bars on their windows, have alarm systems, and live in fear while the criminals walk freely down the streets. The criminals have their “rights” protected and the victim’s have their rights violated. Unless this trend is reversed by a return to Biblical Law, we are indeed a dying society...and one in which it is increasingly dangerous to live. Anytime we think we know better than God and abandon His Law, we are in trouble.
Some people are predicting that we are now living in what will become known as the decline and death of Western Civilization.
72. Deuteronomy 13:5-18 does not call for the death penalty of UNBELIEF or for heresy. pg. 39
Again this is for promoting a false religion in order to subvert a Christian nation. Many horrors have been committed by both Christians and non-Christian in trying to force people to believe certain doctrines. That is against the principles and law of Scripture. People have the right to believe what they choose to believe and ultimately they will answer to God for that. We present them with the truth of Gospel, but we do not use violence or manipulation to get conversions. Only the Holy Spirit can change a heart.
73. This condemnation does not apply to a MISSIONARY situation. pg. 39
74. Total anarchy means total COERCION. pg. 40
75. To surrender children to the state is to turn them over to the ENEMY. pg. 40
